Fresh off the announcement desk — whatsApp seems to be enhancing its voice and calling features on Android. The feature was spotted in development back in March, and now, it seems to be rolling out to Android beta people. As per WABetaInfo, a source with a solid track record for accurately predicting the app’s upcoming features, WhatsApp has begun enabling noise cancellation for voice and video calls for a limited set of people. Here’s the complete tea:

WhatsApp ‘Noise cancellation’ feature

WhatsApp has reportedly rolled out the update with the functionality via version 2.26.14.1 for beta people on Android. The noise cancellation feature for voice and video calls on WhatsApp is expected to eliminate background noise, including traffic and wind, and prioritise the speaker’s sound instead for a clearer output. It will be similar to ‘voice isolation’ on iPhones and similarly-named features on many Android devices available on the native calling apps. Image courtesy: WABetaInfo

Per the screenshot of the WhatsApp feature shared by the source, there will be a toggle for the ‘Noise cancellation’ that can be enabled/ disabled from the messaging app’s calling menu. This addition is expected to noticeably improve call clarity, potentially bringing the app’s voice and video calling quality on par with, or even surpassing, traditional cellular calls. In turn, it could make WhatsApp a far more dependable option for everyday communication.

It may take a while before the feature sees a wider rollout for general people. For now, access appears to be limited to beta testers, something anyone can sign up for via the Google Play Store. To enrol, simply head to the WhatsApp listing, scroll down to the ‘Join the beta’ section, and tap ‘Join’. While you get early access through the beta programme, it’s worth noting that it comes with its share of bugs and issues. Fortunately, there is an option to leave the programme following a similar step as the one for joining.

iPhone’s voice isolation works on WhatsApp calls as well

If you’re an iPhone user, there’s no need to switch to Android. WhatsApp already benefits from iOS’ built-in voice isolation feature, which can significantly enhance call quality. On iOS 26, you can enable this by opening the Control Centre during a WhatsApp call, tapping the highlighted mic mode panel, and selecting ‘Voice Isolation’ from the available options.
