Tesla Model Y L: 5 things that make it different to the Model Y
Tesla Model Y L launches in the country at Rs. 61.99 lakhs, offering key upgrades & "better value for money" over standard Model Y.
If you missed the launch, positioning itself as a “physical AI” company, Tesla is gearing up for 2026 to be the year it takes on the German EVs with its unique mix of software-defined architecture and born-electric practicality. While the Model Y has been on sale since mid-2025, India will be one of the few markets globally to get the RHD version of the Chinese-manufactured Model Y L, where the L denotes its long-wheelbase platform. But, there are significant other differences between the standard Y and the long-wheelbase Y L, all for only a couple of lakhs more at Rs. 61.99 lakhs, making it a better value for money too.
So, besides the exterior design, which largely remains the same except for the new 19in Machina wheel design, there is more to it than meets the eye. Here are the five big changes to the Model Y L. 1 of 4
Dual-motor with AWD: Both standard Model Y variants differ only in battery capacity and share the same RWD setup. The Model Y L exclusively comes with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that enhances traction, stability, and even acceleration times! The launch from nought to the ton now comes in 5.0 seconds as opposed to 5.6 on the Model Y. Every second matters when it comes to smoking that Porsche Macan you’ll be taking on at the traffic lights.
Increased range: Extending even beyond the long-range variant of the Model Y, Tesla claims the Model Y L will do a staggering 681kms (WLTP) on full charge, firmly burying any anxiety related to range for the famed Delhi-to-Manali drive. There are plans to open seven more Supercharger stations on highways connecting major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.
Longer wheelbase: 150mm of space has been added between the wheels of this long-wheelbase variant (3040mm total) and the overall length has increased by 179mm. All this repackaging means Tesla has been able to offer a unique 2+2+2 seating configuration on the Model Y L. It features second-row captain seats equipped with powered armrests, one-touch folding, ventilation, and heating. The unique third row in the “L” variant includes power-reclining seats, one-touch folding capability, and dedicated vented climate control to ensure passenger comfort in the rear-most section.
Adaptive Suspension with Electronic Damping: While the existing Model Y utilizes a standard double-wishbone and multi-link coil suspension, the Model Y L introduces a refined chassis with adaptive suspension and electronic damping shocks that automatically adjust to road conditions to filter out vibrations. The acoustic glass adds another layer of isolation between the chaos of the outside world and the serenity of an EV cabin.
High-Fidelity 19-Speaker Audio System: The Model Y L is equipped with an upgraded immersive audio system featuring 18 speakers and 1 subwoofer. In comparison, the standard Indian variants are typically equipped with a 9-speaker system or a 13-speaker premium setup. In our brief demo, which featured the title track from Dhurandhar, there was no doubt that the Tesla Audio system would be even more immersive without the 17 other media colleagues chattering overhead.
All the usual tech goodies from the Model Y are carried over, like a dual-screen set-up with 16in up front and 8in for the second row occupants, 7 phone charging options include two wireless (50W + 30W) pads, Toy Box suite of playful effects, Megaphone for communicating with jaywalkers, OTA updates and every imaginable app and self-driving trick you can think of. Of course, the legendary Tesla FSD (full self-driving) mode is still undergoing government approvals, so it is software-locked, but all the typical ADAS features we have come to expect from other modern luxury cars are active. Auto Park and Dumb Summon are included as well for those with parking lot anxiety. Watch out for our complete deep dive into its software in a tech review soon.
