Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 leak hints at two-tier strategy for the flagship chip with a Pro variant
There could be two premium-tier chipsets from Qualcomm later this year, a standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and above that, a Pro variant. A leak tells us how they'd differentiate.
In case you were waiting for clarity, snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Gen 6 Pro are expected to launch as separate premium-tier chipsets.
Qualcomm’s next premium-tier chip cycle may not follow the usual one-size-fits-all approach. Instead of a single top-end processor, the company is expected to split things into two: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Fresh details from tipster Digital Chat Station (via) give an idea of how the standard version is shaping up, and where the Pro model could pull ahead.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, identified as SM8950, is expected to be built on TSMC’s 2nm process. It’s said to use a new 2+3+3 CPU layout with 16MB of L2 cache. On the graphics side, leaks point to an Adreno 845 GPU, along with 12MB GMEM and 6MB system-level cache. Support for LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 5.0 storage is also expected.
None of this is surprising for a next-gen premium-tier chip. The focus seems to be on delivering strong, stable performance without pushing too hard on power or cost. That usually makes this kind of chip a better fit for a wider range of premium-tier phones, not just the most expensive ones.
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 vs Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro
The bigger change is how Qualcomm may position the Pro version alongside it. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro (SM8975), based on earlier reports, is expected to step up with a more powerful Adreno 850 GPU, larger cache, and support for newer LPDDR6 memory. Clock speeds could also go higher, with some claims suggesting it may cross 5GHz under certain conditions, and possibly even push closer to 6GHz. Even so, early indications suggest the everyday performance jump may stay under 20 percent compared to the current generation. That points to a more measured upgrade cycle, where efficiency and consistency matter as much as peak numbers.
The Pro chip is likely meant for Ultra-tier phones, while the standard Gen 6 is expected to power a broader set of premium-tier devices. This split lines up with what’s already happening across This phone market. Brands have clearly separated their Pro and Ultra models, and chipmakers now seem to be aligning with that structure. Apple already takes this approach with its standard and Pro chips for the iPhone lineup.
For shoppers, this could make things a bit easier to read. A phone with the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 should still feel fast in everyday use, including gaming and multitasking, while keeping battery life and heat in check. Devices with the Pro chip will likely aim for higher performance ceilings, and will probably sit at the top end of pricing. The main shift here is that not all premium-tier phones will be built on the same chip anymore. For most people, the standard version should be more than enough, while the Pro model will cater to people who want the absolute best performance available.
