In case you were waiting for clarity, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 brings 90fps HD gaming and 5G dual SIM dual active to the entry-level segment.
Qualcomm has announced two new Snapdragon mobile platforms, the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, targeting the mid-segment and entry-tier segments, respectively. The launches matter for the Indian market in particular, where both price bands see some of the highest volumes globally and where chipset performance has historically been a significant factor in purchase decisions. Qualcomm’s own consumer research suggests 82 percent of shoppers consider the chipset essential when choosing a phone, with battery life, camera quality, performance, and connectivity ranking as the top priorities, areas both new platforms are specifically designed to address.

What this means for shoppers
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 is positioned for everyday people who need reliable, efficient performance at accessible price points. Built on a 4nm process node with a 2+6 core configuration running at 2.4GHz and 2.0GHz respectively, the chip delivers meaningful generational improvements while introducing several features that haven’t previously been available in the 400 tier.
The GPU performance jump is the headline number: 77 percent faster than its predecessor’s Adreno GPU. More practically, the 4 Gen 5 is the first 400-series platform to support 90fps gaming at HD resolution, which represents a genuine quality-of-life improvement for casual gamers in this segment. Both the 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5 introduce Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI, though tuned differently for each tier. On the 4 Gen 5, it delivers 43 percent faster app launches and 25 percent less screen stutter, making the day-to-day experience feel noticeably more responsive. The efficiency gains are equally significant. Qualcomm claims 10 percent overall power savings compared to the predecessor, translating to 1.7 additional hours of music playback, an extra hour of video streaming, and 35 minutes more on calls per charge cycle.
On connectivity, the 4 Gen 5 supports 5G with a peak download speed of 2.8Gbps and, for the first time in this tier, Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) 5G + 5G/4G connectivity, meaning both SIM slots can maintain simultaneous connections without compromise. Qualcomm Sound with 96kHz lossless streaming and aptX Adaptive Audio also make their entry-tier debut here. On the camera side, the chip supports 1080p 60fps video recording, electronic image stabilisation, and intelligent face detection.
Memory support is LPDDR4X at 2.1GHz. Qualcomm also confirmed that LPDDR4X will continue to be available despite broader market concerns around the ongoing memory shortage, and noted that additional 400-tier products supporting both LPDDR4 and LPDDR5 are on the roadmap.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 targets a more demanding mid-segment audience and arrives with a more capable feature set across the board. The chip uses a 4+4 core configuration, with four performance cores at 2.6GHz and four efficiency cores at 2.0GHz, built on the same 4nm process node and supporting LPDDR5 memory. GPU performance is up 21 percent over the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4. Power efficiency has improved by 8 percent, adding up to two extra hours of music playback and 38 additional minutes of gaming on a charge. Video recording steps up to 4K 30fps. The 6 Gen 5 also gets Snapdragon Smooth Motion UI, delivering 20 percent faster app launches and 18 percent less screen stutter compared to its predecessor.
The camera capabilities are more ambitious than what the 6 series has historically offered. The 6 Gen 5 introduces AI-based night vision technology and 100x in-sensor zoom support, bringing photography features previously associated with more premium segments down to the mid-segment. Gaming is covered by Snapdragon Elite Gaming features, including the newly introduced Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0, Game Super Resolution, and Qualcomm Game FPS 3.0, a meaningful stack for a mid-tier chip.
The 6 Gen 5 introduces Wi-Fi 7 support with peak speeds of 5.8Gbps, Bluetooth 6.0 with channel sounding for improved spatial audio accuracy, FDD uplink carrier aggregation for better upload performance, and Qualcomm eXpand, a new feature enabling seamless switching between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth audio without interruption.
Both the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 platforms will power smartphones arriving in the second half of 2026. Xiaomi, whose VP Jun Li commented on the launch, is among the confirmed partners alongside OPPO and Realme, as well as Honor for global markets.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5’s combination of 90fps gaming, DSDA 5G, and meaningful battery improvements makes a strong case for the entry tier. The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5’s Wi-Fi 7, 100x zoom support, AI night vision, and Smooth Motion UI push capabilities that were mid-premium territory just a year ago, possibly into the Rs 20,000–30,000 range. Both are worth watching for when brands announce devices built around them in the months ahead.
