IPhone 18 tipped to get cost-cutting downgrades, may launch with iPhone 18e
Apple could implement some cost-cutting measures to lower the manufacturing cost of the iPhone 18 to keep prices in check. Here's what may change.
In case you were waiting for clarity, a leak claims the iPhone 18 may launch next spring alongside the iPhone 18e, skipping Apple’s usual September window.
A new leak suggests Apple could take a different approach with the standard iPhone 18, both in terms of launch timing and hardware. As per a tip from Chinese leaker Fixed Focus Digital, the vanilla iPhone 18 may skip Apple’s usual September window and instead launch next spring alongside the iPhone 18e.
If accurate, that would leave the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and a possible foldable iPhone to take centre stage at Apple’s September event, with the base model shifting to a separate cycle. Apple has adjusted its launch strategy before, but this would be a more noticeable split between tiers.
iPhone 18 leaked downgrades
The bigger talking point is around hardware. The same leak claims Apple could introduce cost-cutting changes in the iPhone 18, bringing it closer to the more affordable ‘e’ model than usual. These changes reportedly include a downgraded manufacturing process for the chipset, lower chip specifications, and reduced memory, either in capacity or speed. The likely reason is rising chip costs, which have been affecting smartphone pricing across brands.
If these downgrades are relative to the Pro models, it simply widens the gap between tiers, something Apple has already been doing. But if the base iPhone 18 ends up being a step down from the iPhone 17, that would be a more noticeable shift, but that’s highly unlikely.
It’s also worth noting that cost-cutting at the hardware level does not necessarily mean the phone will be cheaper. Apple has historically maintained pricing even when adjusting components, so the benefit may be more about protecting margins than lowering the entry price.
Over the past few generations, Apple has been steadily separating its standard and Pro iPhones, particularly in areas like chipset performance, display technology, and cameras. This leak suggests that divide could become more pronounced. That approach is already common among Android brands. Samsung, Xiaomi, and others often differentiate their premium-tier and non-premium-tier models more clearly, sometimes using slightly older or scaled-down hardware in lower-priced devices.
If Apple moves the standard iPhone to a spring launch alongside the ‘e’ model, it also changes how the lineup is perceived. The Pro models would remain the main event, while the base model becomes a secondary release.
For shoppers, the impact depends on how noticeable these changes are in everyday use. If performance and longevity remain consistent, the differences may not matter for most people. But if the hardware step-down affects long-term performance, the value equation shifts. In that case, the iPhone 17 could become a more attractive option, especially once its price drops after the new lineup arrives. At the same time, buyers who want the latest hardware may feel pushed towards the Pro models.
