If you missed the launch, dummy units suggest the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will keep a similar overall design but feature a more protruding camera module.

Apple’s next set of iPhones are starting to come into focus through a mix of leaks. As is mostly the case, the overall design doesn’t seem to be changing much, but the camera system could be doing most of the heavy lifting this year. We get to see the much-hyped iPhone Ultra too, which gives us a sense of what Apple’s first foldable might be like.

Dummy units of the upcoming models, shared by Vadim Yuryev from Max Tech, offer a first look at what the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max might look like. These units are usually based on factory data used by accessory makers.

iPhone 18 Pro design: thicker camera module expected

Dummy units, typically made by third-party case manufacturers using measurements that leak from Apple’s supply chain, are usually a reliable early indicator of design changes. The latest batch, shared by Vadim Yuryev of YouTube channel Max Tech, shows the iPhone 18 Pro Max with a camera plateau that is visibly thicker than the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with lenses that protrude more from the rear panel. Placed next to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, the change is noticeable, even if the rest of the body remains largely the same.

The overall dimensions of the two phones are said to be very close, with just a 0.36 mm height increase and a 0.39 mm width increase on the 18 Pro Max. The bulk of the change is concentrated at the camera module itself. Samsung and a few Chinese brands have been trying to flatten their camera bumps or blend them into the design. Apple seems comfortable moving the other way if it helps fit better camera hardware inside. That has been the pattern for a while now. Each generation adds a little more around the camera, even when the rest of the phone stays familiar.

In the images, the iPhone Ultra dummy does not show a MagSafe ring, which is unusual. It is unclear whether that means no MagSafe or no wireless charging at all. It also has just two cameras, which is surprising for a device expected to sit at the top of Apple’s lineup. When unfolded, its width is roughly comparable to the length of an iPhone 17 Pro Max, with a reported height of around 111.5 mm. Placed next to an iPad mini, the Ultra’s display is smaller, but the difference looks relatively tight due to thinner bezels.

If these dummy units are anything to go by, the iPhone 18 Pro series looks like a familiar update where the biggest visible change sits at the back. For anyone already on a recent Pro iPhone, that alone may not feel like enough to switch, unless the larger camera bump or slight tweaks in size make a difference in hand. Older iPhone people might find the overall refinement more worthwhile. The iPhone Ultra, on the other hand, still feels like a first step into something new. The design hints at a different direction, but based on what we’re seeing here, it looks like a device that will likely appeal more to early adopters than everyday shoppers, at least in its first iteration.
