Apple may bring titanium back to future iPhones after iPhone 17 Pro switch to aluminum
Apple is tipped to go back to using titanium for its future iPhone models, claims a Weibo tipster. Here's why.
In case you were waiting for clarity, weibo tipster Instant Digital says Apple is researching an improved version of titanium for future iPhones.
Apple may not be done with titanium in iPhones after all. As per Weibo tipster Instant Digital (via), the company is reportedly researching an improved version of titanium for future iPhone models, despite recently switching the iPhone 17 Pro series back to aluminum.
The move away from titanium surprised many because Apple had spent the last two generations positioning the material as a defining feature of its Pro iPhones. Both the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro heavily marketed titanium for its lighter weight and premium feel compared to stainless steel.
But with the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, Apple changed course. Reports suggested the shift to aluminum was largely driven by thermal considerations, as aluminum dissipates heat more effectively during gaming, AI processing and sustained workloads. Interestingly, Apple still reportedly uses titanium in the rumoured iPhone Air because the material offers better rigidity for ultra-thin devices.
Why Apple could go back to titanium
As per the leak, Apple internally still sees titanium as an important premium material and never intended aluminum to become a permanent replacement. The biggest challenge is heat management. Titanium alloy is stronger and more scratch-resistant, but it doesn’t conduct heat as efficiently as aluminum. That trade-off becomes more noticeable as smartphones continue handling more demanding AI features, console-level gaming and advanced camera processing. The tipster claims Apple is now working on a revised titanium formula that could improve thermal conductivity while also reducing weight without increasing the phone’s thickness. The industry is facing similar challenges too. Brands like Samsung and several Chinese smartphone makers are increasingly focusing on vapour chambers, graphite cooling systems and lighter materials as premium-tier devices become thinner and more powerful.
The leak also mentions liquid metal as another material Apple is exploring for future devices, possibly even for a rumoured iPhone Ultra, though mass production reportedly remains difficult for now.
Apple’s material decisions recently drew attention after people online reported visible scuffs and marks appearing on some iPhone 17 Pro units, especially darker colour variants. Social media quickly dubbed it as “Scratchgate.”
While some people linked the issue to Apple’s shift back to aluminum, the company later clarified that many of the visible marks on retail devices came from material transfer caused by MagSafe display stands rather than permanent structural scratches. That said, reviewers noted that anodised aluminum coatings can show abrasions more visibly over time compared to titanium finishes. That has again highlighted the balancing act Apple faces between cooling performance, durability, weight and premium feel in modern premium-tier phones.
Earlier, titanium was positioned as a visual and marketing differentiator for Pro models. Now, Apple seems more focused on balancing performance, cooling and long-term usability. A change of materials is unlikely in the next iPhone refresh, so instead of focusing only on materials like titanium or aluminum, people should notice how comfortably a phone handles heat, gaming, battery performance and durability.
