Apple’s AirPods with cameras reportedly in final stages of testing, could launch later this year
Apple's AirPods with cameras launch could take place later this year. Take a look at the complete details.
Worth noting for Indian buyers — apple’s next AI device may not be a headset or smart glasses; it could be a pair of AirPods. As per a new Bloomberg report, the company is now in the late stages of developing AirPods with built-in cameras, marking one of Apple’s boldest attempts yet to bring AI into everyday hardware. Unlike traditional cameras meant for photos or videos, these sensors are designed to “see” the environment around people and feed that information to Siri.

These Apple wireless earbuds are reportedly based on the AirPods Pro 3 design, though with slightly longer stems to house the cameras. Internally, Apple testers are already using near-final prototypes that have entered the DVT (Design Validation Testing) stage, which is one step before mass-production trials.
The idea behind the cameras is less about recording and more about contextual AI. people could look at ingredients in a kitchen and ask Siri what to cook, or get smarter navigation prompts based on landmarks around them. In many ways, it sounds like Apple wants to extend the iPhone’s Visual Intelligence feature directly into wearable audio. That said, it will be different from the Apple Vision Pro.
While the Vision Pro focuses on an immersive visual and productivity experience, the AI AirPods appear aimed at passive, always-available assistance. The concept is closer to smart glasses, except without forcing people to wear a visible face computer. Apple is reportedly adding an LED indicator that lights up whenever visual data is being processed in the cloud, similar to how smart glasses signal recording activity. Whether that will be enough to ease concerns remains to be seen.
Apple’s broader AI rollout has been slower than expected, especially after delays to its revamped Siri experience. Reports suggest the upgraded assistant, now benefiting from integration with Google Gemini models, is expected to arrive later this year alongside a stronger push into AI-powered products.
Even if Apple unveils the camera-equipped AirPods soon, the first generation will likely be expensive and heavily dependent on Apple Intelligence features. people simply looking for excellent audio, ANC, or ecosystem integration will probably still be better served by the current AirPods lineup. But the idea behind these AirPods with cameras may actually be a smart one. Given that AirPods are easy to wear and don’t necessarily get in the way of doing anything, the AI-powered ones with cameras might actually feel natural to wear.
AirPods are also already mainstream, and Apple may be betting that the easiest way to make an AI wearable is to hide it inside something people already wear every day.
